The Assam Assembly has gone one up on fanatics who want dress codes for girls in this country. The Committee of Ethics of the state Assembly has decreed that it is not appropriate for members to wear informal dresses such as jeans, T-shirts and salwar-kameez while attending the House.
This committee has even recommended a dress code for members — men should sport formalwear while women should wear ‘traditional’ outfits while attending the House. This panel has conveniently not specified it means by ‘formal’ wear and ‘traditional’ outfits since it has already described salwar-kameez as ‘casual’ wear.
So if Congress president Sonia Gandhi were to be visiting the Assam Assembly, she would probably not be allowed to enter. But you never know, Assam is ruled by a Congress-led government after all.
And come to think of it, the commitee was headed not by a man, but a woman — Deputy Speaker Pranati Phukan. We have a quesiton for her: what does she expect Mehbooba Mufti to wear if she wear to visit the Assam Assembly for whatever reason?
Now, we will leave the quesiton at that. We are too polite to bog her for an answer.
