For Sushmita Sen, the chastity bogey is back.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed a judicial magistrate to inquire into a complaint filed against Sen for making "obscene and derogatory comments" on chastity in October 2006. [Link]

Setting aside a lower court order dismissing a complaint by an advocate seeking police action against Sen, a former Miss Universe, Justice A Selvam directed that the inquiry be held for offences under various sections of Indecent Representation of Women Act 1986 and Young Persons (Harmful Publications) Act 1856 among others. The judge rejected the contention that there was no basic material for the allegations made against the 33-year-old actress.

The petitioner, S Greesh Kumar, had alleged that Sen's comments aired by all prominent English news channels on Oct 6, 2006 and also carried by a Tamil daily, had "degraded" the moral fabric of India. Appealing against the Magistrate's order, he contended that Sen's statements were "obscene, lascivious and appealed to prurient interest and tend to deprave and corrupt young persons".

Allowing the criminal revision petition, the judge remitted the case against Sen to the Judicial Magistrate for proper action as per law, including issuing of summons to her. The petitioner said his complaint, filed in November 2006, was dismissed after a year by the magistrate.

This Greesh Kumar is so tenacious. Were it not for him, I wonder what would have happened to the moral fabric of our country.
