Four women's colleges in Kanpur have ordered a ban on girls wearing jeans and top, arguing that this will help reduce incidents of eve-teasing. They were also barred from carrying mobile phones while women teachers were asked not to wear sleeveless blouses.

Describing it as an "undemocratic" and "unconstitutional" move, All India Democratic Women's Association president and former CPI(M) MP Subhashini Ali said that she has come to know that principals in all private degree colleges in Uttar Pradesh are planning to extend the ban in their institutions.
The AIDWA along with students' organisations will stage demonstrations against it and will take a delegation to Governor T V Rajeshwar, appealing to him to intervene and ensure withdrawal of the ban, she said.
"A dress code cannot prevent eve-teasing. Can principals guarantee that if girls stop wearing jeans, their harassment will stop? The police and administration should take strong steps against eve-teasers, only then such incidents will stop," Ali said.
