Conflict is debilitating, for ordinary people. But conflict studies, on the other hand, can be fascinating. There are as many narratives as there are stakeholders, most in conflict with each other. And the truth does not always lie in the middle as many would like to believe, it often veers towards the victims.
I recommend the following books, all non-fiction, for a closer, better understanding of the Kashmir narrative. There are, of course, many other excellent books on Kashmir that are available in online bookstores, but I have left them out since they are on the expensive side, some of them frightfully expensive. But, like all lists, this one's bound to be controversial.
Here goes:
- Curfewed Night
Basharat Peer

The best, telling first-person account on Kashmir you can get your hands on to. One of the best works of narrative non-fiction I have ever read: powerful, visual, gut-wrenching, compelling. - The Meadow: The Kashmir Kidnapping that Changed the Face of Modern Terrorism
Adrian Levy and Cathy Scott Clark

A journalist account. And investigative journalism, at that. The title says it to quite an extent, but it is also a lot about the skulduggery that shaped the conflict in the 1990s. - Our Moon has Blood Clots : A Memoir of a Lost Home in Kashmir
Rahul Pandita

The Kashmiri Pandit's version of the conflict. - Kashmir: The Case for Freedom
Tariq Ali, Hilal Bhat, Angana P. Chatterji, Habbah Khatun, Pankaj Mishra, Arundhati Roy

There is, indeed, a case for freedom for Kashmir. A must have. - Until My Freedom Has Come: The New Intifada in Kashmir
Edited by Sanjay Kak

An anthology of articles and essays that were written by journalists and writers during the turbulent summer of 2010. - Kashmir: The Unwritten History
Christopher Snedden

A phenomenally well-researched book on the forgotten people in the Kashmir conflict: those of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. - Hindu Rulers, Muslim Subjects: Islam, Rights, and the History of Kashmir
Mridu Rai

Another book whose title is tell-tale, but this one is a masterly, scholarly work on the history of Kashmir, especially for Islamophobes. - Of Occupation and Resistance
Edited by Fahad Shah

The dominance of militancy/terrorism in the Kashmir is as good as gone. The youth of today's Kashmir speaks in the language of resistance. A thought-provoking collection collated by a bright, young journalist. - Gender, Conflict and Peace in Kashmir: Invisible Stakeholders
Seema Shekhawat

Conflict always finds its first set of victims in women. This one is a bit academic, but needs to be read for the canvas that it covers. - The Kashmir Disputes 1947-2012(Vol-1) | The Kashmir Disputes 1947-2012(Vol-2)
AG Noorani
